Akshaya Tritiya Gold Buying Guide for NRIs (2026)
NRIs face three friction points on Akshaya Tritiya: remittance delays, customs duty on carried gold, and SGB ineligibility. Here is how to work around each.
Option A: Digital gold via NRI-friendly platforms MMTC-PAMP and SafeGold allow NRE/NRO account purchases. Most retail digital gold apps (Google Pay, PhonePe) restrict NRIs. Expect to need a KYC update before Akshaya Tritiya; start the week before.
Option B: Remit to family for physical purchase SBI and HDFC's NRE remittance typically clears same-day if sent before 2 PM IST. For Akshaya Tritiya on April 30, 2026 (Thursday), initiate by April 28 to be safe. Family can buy on your instruction; invoice in your name is possible at Tanishq, Kalyan, and most bank-gold sellers if they hold your passport copy.
Option C: Carrying gold from origin country Allowed for male passengers: 20g worth up to ₹50,000; female: 40g worth up to ₹1 lakh. Anything beyond attracts ~38% customs duty (12.5% BCD + 3% GST + surcharges), which almost always kills the arbitrage. Do not "carry gold to India" as an Akshaya Tritiya strategy unless duty-paid value is still cheaper than Indian retail, rarely true in 2026.
Option D: Sovereign Gold Bond, NOT available to NRIs SGB is restricted to resident Indians only. NRIs cannot subscribe. Any "NRI SGB" offers are scams.
Tax angles:
- If held as investment and sold after 3 years: long-term capital gain with indexation
- Digital gold and physical gold taxed identically on sale
- NRE account credit is tax-free; gains on gold are still taxed in India
- US-based NRIs should check PFIC rules for gold ETFs (they can get ugly)
Practical Akshaya Tritiya 2026 playbook for an NRI:
- Week before: remit amount to NRE/NRO account
- Day before: instruct family member to book with jeweler at prevailing rate, lock rate
- Day of: family picks up jewelry or coin, bill in your name, digital scan emailed
- If no family in India: buy digital gold via MMTC-PAMP app with NRO-linked card
