Gifting Gold to Parents on Akshaya Tritiya: Ideas & Budgets
Parents are the most common gift recipient on Akshaya Tritiya. The tricky part is matching the gift to what they will actually use.
₹5,000 budget
- 0.5g 24K coin from MMTC-PAMP or SBI, keeps value, easy to store
- Silver lakshmi-ganesh coin + 1g digital gold, covers ritual and investment
₹10,000 – ₹25,000
- 1g – 2g 24K coin (most honest gift)
- Plain 22K hallmarked ring or small pendant for mother
- Silver thali or glass set (usable on every puja)
₹1,00,000
- 22K plain hallmarked chain (mother) at 6–8% making, roughly 10g
- 24K gold bar 10g for father, investment grade
- Combination: 5g coin + 5g jewelry works if both usage and investment matter
₹5,00,000+
- Sovereign Gold Bond in parent's name, tax-free if held to maturity, pays 2.5% interest, no making charge
- Combined with a small symbolic physical coin for the day itself
- Bridal-style jewelry (for wedding gifting) at 15–25% making is rarely "worth it" financially but may be the only culturally acceptable format
Tax note Gifts to parents are fully tax-exempt under Section 56. No limit. But keep the invoice, it establishes cost basis if parents later sell.
The "will they actually wear it" test Before buying jewelry, check the design against what your parent already wears. Mothers who wear chains daily will not switch to a heavy ornate piece. Fathers rarely wear gold beyond a thin ring. For non-wearers, always default to coin or SGB, the value is preserved, and nothing is wasted on making charges.
