Extra weight added to your bill to cover gold 'lost' during jewelry manufacturing. 0–10% is common. Often inflated.
In traditional handcrafted jewelry, some gold is lost to filings and furnace residue. Fair wastage is under 2% on modern machine-made pieces and up to 5% on hand-carved temple jewelry. Anything above 5% in 2026 is effectively additional margin, especially on chain-store products made by CNC.
